Kilkenny, Ireland – a city renowned for its medieval charm and its burgeoning cycling community. Cycle Kilkenny, a group dedicated to promoting everyday cycling in the city, are now part of the Irish Cycling Campaign. Volunteer Dave Anderson from the Irish Cycling Campaign recently visited Kilkenny to meet the group, to share experiences organising local groups.
The visit kicked off with a picturesque bicycle tour around the city, starting at Kilkenny Castle. The medieval backdrop contrasted delightfully with the vibrant, modern energy of the cyclists. Local organiser Roisin led the group through the winding streets of the town and wended its way along the scenic River Nore, demonstrating both the potential and the challenges of cycling in Kilkenny.
As the group the busy streets, it became evident that while Kilkenny holds great promise for cyclists, improvements in infrastructure are essential. Yet, the enthusiasm of Cycle Kilkenny members suggested that they are more than ready to tackle these challenges head-on.
The ride concluded with a gathering back at the castle, where Dave gave an presentation about the Irish Cycling Campaign and the experiences with another local group in County Meath, Navan Cycling Initiative.
Joining him virtually were Dr. Damien Ó Tuama, the National Cycling Coordinator, and Neasa Bheilbigh, Chairperson of the Executive Committee. Their insights added depth to the discussion, offering both practical advice and a compelling vision for the future of cycling in Ireland.
Neasa expressed her excitement that Cycle Kilkenny intends to join the campaign, highlighting the power of local groups to effect change. “Cycling isn’t just a mode of transport,” she emphasized, “it’s a way to connect with your environment, reduce your carbon footprint, and build a sense of community.”
As the session wrapped up, it was clear that Kilkenny’s cycling future looks bright. The passion and determination of Cycle Kilkenny, coupled with the support of the Irish Cycling Campaign, signal a promising path forward.
